High Court Decision Paves way for remote DVRs
Comcast has been working on a XaaS (“Anything” as a Service) concept that plays well into Cisco’s hands and raises a lot of questions about Tivo’s future as well as could put significant pricing pressure on DBS (satellite) TV providers DVR strategies. Remote DVRs essentially would require Comcast to really beef up their Data Center storage technologies and I can’t imagine a better candidate for the virtualization benefits of Cisco’s solutions (Nexus 7000 series). This is great for Cisco’s move into the DC market (or HP or IBM… whoever wins the contracts…) and will also put tremendous pressure on their current bandwidth infrastructure, which should require significant upgrades and investment in Cisco’s core product lines. Chambers has been saying that “Video is the killer app” for some time now. Remote DVRs certainly is evidence of that.
